If you are considering moving to Malta bear in mind the following:
  • On average it takes 3 months to find jobs in Malta.
  • Do not expect to hear back within days of your application.  Recruitment takes time and you will often hear back a lot later than you expected, sometimes weeks later.  You may not hear anything at all.  Keep notes of who you have applied to and when so you dont lose track should you hear back from them weeks later.
  • Start your job search before you move to Malta.  Ideally do not move to Malta until you have got a job, unless you can afford to be unemployed for a time.
  • Language skills are an asset.  Being able to speak Maltese is a definite bonus as many employers prefer a level of spoken and written Maltese.  Due to proximity of Malta to Italy, there are a lot of local business ties - therefore being able to speak Italian is also an advantage.
  • The cost of living is low in some areas, but relatively high in others.  For example, the local buses are cheap, but buying a car is expensive with parking problems. Consider this when looking for somewhere to live/work.
  • The Maltese are given preference over foreigners - it is not always the best person on the day as local factors are taken into consideration.
  • Maltese wages are low in comparison to other areas in Europe.  Be prepared to lower your salary expections (this depends on the industry you are in).
